...that we use about 36.4 billion straws every year in Europe alone (source: Plastic Soup Foundation)? That's right, over 36 billion straws, most of them plastic.

Compared to the total volume of plastic waste, that number might not sound alarming. But these straws end up everywhere: in nature, in our oceans, and often inside animals or lodged in their bodies, injuring them. You may have seen the video of a biologist removing a straw from a sea turtle's nose. Hard to watch, in our opinion, and exactly what can happen when a straw is carelessly tossed aside. Together, we can make sure that doesn't happen.

That's why we went looking for a better alternative, and found one: a straw that's 100% plastic-free, sustainable, and even edible. Made from pasta! This way, you get to enjoy your drink with a straw, without adding to the plastic problem.

Why pasta?

When we set out to create a sustainable alternative to plastic straws, we wanted a product made purely from natural, sustainable ingredients. Pasta turned out to be the perfect base: it's nothing more than flour and water, you can't get much more sustainable than that.

The pasta we use is made from corn flour rather than wheat. That's a deliberate choice: it means we're not using up wheat that's needed for the food industry.

What about paper straws?

Paper straws have been around for a while as a plastic alternative, but paper has a tricky habit: it absorbs moisture, softens, and eventually falls apart, right when you're enjoying your drink.

The industry's fix was to add a chemical coating to keep the straws intact. The catch? That coating isn't sustainable, which means the straws have to be thrown away with residual waste instead of being composted.

Our pasta straws skip that chemical process entirely. They stay firm in cold drinks for about an hour, no coating, no chemical additives needed. That makes pasta a better, more sustainable alternative than paper.

What about reusable straws?

Besides disposable straws, you could also opt for reusable ones, made from stainless steel, glass, or bamboo. Sounds sustainable, right? There's just one major catch: reusable means cleaning, ideally with the brushes that come supplied.

Proper cleaning isn't optional here, it's essential for hygiene. Think of lipstick residue left behind, or a guest with a cold sore unknowingly passing it on to the next person. That level of care takes time, and combined with the higher upfront cost of the straws themselves and the extra staff hours needed to clean them properly, reusable straws quickly become impractical for a busy hospitality business.

Perfect!
